What if Peter hadn't been the secret-keeper, but still a traitor?

It wasn't often that Sirius considered, even for a moment, being grateful to his mother. She had made his life misery, she had turned his brother from him, she had messed him up the way only family could. But at least she had also prepared him for pain, definitely for more pain than any growing child should have to experience and through enough that he had been able to withstand more torture than most minds could take since he'd been captured.

A trap, a simple one, but he had trusted Peter and that had made this so easy. Of course he'd trusted Peter. Not because Peter was brave or overly loyal, but because he just didn't seem capable of deceit. Too much the coward, too stupid. he had underestimated him and that's how he ended up here. Some dungeon, who knew where, chained to the wall, wandless and in pain.

Deatheaters weren't gentle captors, especially not to bloodtraitors. He hadn't eaten or drunk, hell, hadn't slept or pissed since this started, not that he had any way of telling how much time had passed. But as long as there was so much importance on getting the truth from him, at least Sirius knew that they were still safe and that gave him strength like nothing else.

There was no one with him at the moment, a short but welcome reprieve. Sirius had closed his eyes, tried to use wandless magic to find some spell to break the chains, hopeless as that was. He'd have been better of focusing his strength on a healing spell, but that had never been his style. Too much of a fighter.

Remus pushed the other marauder back down with a gentle hand, his other casting the spell to draw his patronus out.

The large, silvery-blue dog shook itself once, looking to Remus and Sirius before taking off to vanish through the door, the important message on it's way.

He sat beside Sirius on the bed when the patronus was gone, fingers slipping into his hair gently, soothingly carding through it almost like petting.

"If we are going to help at all, we both need our health. James will be fine. He knows better than to let anyone know where he is. He's always been clever. Rest."

Remus shifted, drawing himself closer to Sirius and squeezing his hand. He hated that they had captured his mate. That Sirius had been their prisoner for an amount of time he could only guess. But right now safety was more important than revenge. He refused to allow it to all be for nothing. They would catch Peter.

But not right now.

"I missed you too, Padfoot." He brought the hand in his to his face, rubbing his cheek against Sirius' skin. He would not let them get at Sirius ever again. Not even Dumbledore could pull him from his mate's side, now.

"It doesn't matter." It didn't. Everyone was on edge during this. The war had turned good wizards into terrible people, and the fear was bringing out the worst and best in everyone. He did not care about any of it right now.

Instead Remus slipped down into the bed and carefully draped an arm around his lover, breathing in his scent. He still smelled like blood and misery, but he was alive and there and right now that was all Remus needed. He could pull Sirius into the shower later.

He cast a spell on the marauder to relax his muscles and numb the pain some more, holding him close.

"Your body needs the rest to heal properly," He pressed his warmth all around his lover, leaning his head against Sirius'. Quietly, he added after a moment. "I'll make sure nothing happens while you do."

Remus did not let go. He kept his arms around Sirius and held him close. He would not let go even after Sirius drifted to sleep. Guarantees or not, Remus had his lover back, and he would hold onto that for as long as this war allowed him to and longer.
