Regulus didn't look overly pleased with that answer, equating it to leaving him being the best thing. Obviously, he knew that wasn't why his brother had left, but when their parents got particularly bad he couldn't help but feel bitter over having been left behind. It wasn't his fault he did what he was told and Sirius didn't.
