"You ruined the whole batch so whatever is in the pot, basically. About two thirds. Why? Are you thinking of going to the event as a pixie yourself?" God, he hoped not. He didn't even want to know. He just wanted to get his fix for this mess, wash his hair and get ready. If they were late down then they'd never hear the end of it.
"I'm detecting a hint of mischief. Please tell me you're not plotting anything. Can't we have one nights break from you and your schemes?" It wasn't as fun seeing Sirius constantly in trouble as he wanted it to be. It didn't feel good to watch them pull Sirius apart. It didn't make him feel like he was better or more loved - it just made him feel like shit.
"Listen, Regulus. Mischief knows no rest." Sirius smirked and kept thinking, finally finding the right tube and pulling it free, but not yet handing it over. "Whose house are we at again? Malfoy, right?"
He pondered, almost dreamily. "Lucius does have that long, long, long hair." He sighed, then smiled at Regulus. He was hoping he could touch upon it. That hint of mischief inside his brother, that he always tried to bury so well.
"Don't you think his hair could be improved if there was just a bit of sparkle, to catch the eye?"
"He'll look like a veela if you put a load of sparkles in all that blond hair." He could imagine it now, Lucius Malfoy and his sparkling blond hair. He smiled a little at the very idea but that smile soon faltered when he remembered himself. He couldn't. It wasn't right. He shook his head and looked away.
"Do as you please, it's your head on the line."
Swallowing hard, Regulus moved across the room. "I'm going to go wash my hair and get ready. This stuff better come out now or I'm going to be very cross with you."
"It will come out, all right. Just turn your hair pink, but I hear pink is the new black." It would not dye his hair pink, but hey, why not leave a bit of suspense? Sirius got up and picked up his ball again as well, calling after Regulus. "Hey, Reg."
He waited to have his attention and then realised he didn't even know what to say. He wanted to break the ice somehow, but at this point it felt impossible. Usually he just tried to butcher his way through and they both came out the worse for it. Maybe it was the only way for them to be any more. "Don't make such a sour face all the time. How are you ever gonna snatch a cousin to marry?"
"Don't insult our family or our bloodline." Regulus cut through the joke with little humour, giving his brother a dark look. He turned away and ran his fingers through his hair, trying to release some stress. "I don't have a sour face, I have an annoying brother. Doesn't seem surprising that the two come together often, does it?"
Shaking his head, Regulus made a retreat because it was safer to run. To smile and to laugh with his brother again - that just didn't seem possible. Even if he missed it. Missed it more than he'd ever confess.
